NEXT STEP: A project of the Children’s Guardian Fund
Every year teens in dependency reaching adulthood must leave their foster homes, often without the experience or support to assist them with the complex issues and decisions they need to make in order to become self-sufficient.
In 2007, the Next Step program began as a permanent committee of the Family Court Professional Collaborative. The following year, Next Step formed a partnership with the Twelfth Circuit Family Law Advisory Group (F.L.A.G.). In 2009, the Next Step program was adopted by the 501(c) (3) charitable organization Children’s Guardian Fund, Inc.
Next Step assists youths aging out of foster care to develop a solid life plan by partnering each one with a trio of adult professionals. These mentors are available to help the teen determine appropriate educational goals, explain tenants' rights and responsibilities, prepare a tax return, or whatever else may come up for the fledgling adult. Mentors agree to a two-year commitment, which allows them to develop a professional relationship and become part of the teen’s support system. Special mentor training is provided.
Next Step has also developed a peer tutoring program in collaboration with students from New College of Florida and established a clothes closet in the Manatee County Judicial Center for all 12th Circuit dependent teens. A Resource Guide listing community services for this population has been assembled to be available both on and offline.
Next Step is continually accepting applications for mentors. If you are interested in volunteering or have questions about Next Step, please download the information sheet and application form for professional mentor volunteers. METV Family Law Education Project
FCPC developed a public information piece under the guidance of Committee chair Honorable Diana Moreland. This piece highlighted various professions which can be utilized to help facilitate a more complete and successful resolution to family law matters. Broadcast of the first installment aired earlier this year on Brighthouse Channel 614. Acting credits are given to our local professionals and FCPC Board Members.
The second installment, or continuation of the Family Law process, is currently in development. It will feature various Post-Filing and Pre-Trial issues with a focus on the new Statutes. A broadcast date has yet to be finalized.
